Virgin Media confirms release date for 50Mbps service

Tuesday 9th December 2008, by Daniel King

Internet service provider (ISP) Virgin Media has announced that it will roll out its new 50Mbps service on December 15th.

Once the connection is available nationwide, it will be the fastest home broadband connection available in the UK.

The ISP recently sent out invites to attend a "mystery event" on December 15th and while it was not confirmed, many people believed it was to celebrate the launch of the super-fast broadband package.

Virgin Media has now confirmed that the event in mid-December will be to launch the 50Mbps service.

The cable operator has been testing high-speed broadband throughout 2008, with customers in Warrington and other areas receiving a free modem and 50Mbps connection.

Virgin Media's internet speeds already outstrip those of its competitors, but with the latest upgrade to its fibre-optic network, users will be able to achieve internet connections that are significantly faster than those offered by ISPs using BT's copper cable ADSL lines.

Those who subscribe to the new service will receive a 50Mbps DOCSIS 3.0 tier - pictures of which were released on the internet months ago.

It is rumoured that Virgin will be imposing a 10GB cap between 16:00 and 21:00 GMT.

If this is exceeded, the company will slow the connection down to 7.5Mbps.

Broadband customers looking to switch to the high-speed option will need to purchase the XXL package, which should cost around £52 and have upstream speeds of around 1.5Mbps.
