Vtesse to supply another rural community with super-fast broadband

Tuesday 13th July 2010, by Daniel King

Living in a rural area in the UK may no longer mean that people are cut off from the rest of the world, relying on slow services for their internet needs.

The desire among broadband providers to reach remote place in the country seems to be on the rise and one provider has recently announced that it is to deliver super-fast broadband to another rural community.

Vtesse Broadband, the recently-launched broadband arm of Vtesse Networks, has announced that it is to supply the service to the rural hamlet of Broughton, near Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire.

According to Vtesse, the deal means Broughton is likely to become the "best connected Final Third Community" in the whole country.

Aidan Paul, chief executive of Vtesse, said that Broughton was selected due to its close proximity to one of the firm's main arterial fibre optic routes.

He explained that this would mean the cost of supplying super-fast broadband to the community was "acceptable".

"We are also very keen to test the practicality of pole sharing and this community is largely pole fed for both power and telecoms. We will be looking to share existing poles and also to use our own where necessary," he added.

"Our deployments across the UK now cover Fibre to the Cabinet, Fibre to the Mast and Fibre to the Home and the data we are getting from these comparative projects will guide future deployment."

The expert said that for the UK to benefit from wide use of these technologies, the government must do all it can to ensure a level playing field for internet service providers.

Earlier this week it was announced that another rural area, Iwade in Kent, is set to receive super-fast broadband after the local council raised enough money for connection after BT originally deemed it too challenging with regard to costs.
