Warwickshire superfast broadband funding approved
Tuesday 21st February 2012, by Harry Wallis
Funding for improved broadband connectivity in the rural areas of Warwickshire has been approved by the council's cabinet.
In order to improve services, £3 million will be contributed to the money that is needed to match the £4.07 million that Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) is making available to the county's authority.
As well as this, an extra £500,000 has been approved for expenses linked with operating the project. The balance of this and the match funding will be supplied by Coventry City Council, Solihul Metropolitan Borough Council and five districts and boroughs in Warwickshire.
Warwickshire's local broadband plan draft was forwarded to BDUK last week, and describes the county's broadband provision and its sub-regional approach to improving internet speeds. It was also submitted ahead of the government's deadline.
In order to discover which areas require improved broadband the most, a number of online surveys have been uploaded online by the council, which has encouraged residents and businesses to take part in the research.
Warwickshire County Council is also looking to recruit people to promote the project in their own villages.
Councillor Alan Cockburn, Warwickshire County Council’s portfolio holder for sustainable communities, said: "Superfast broadband is an absolutely essential technology for our rural communities and they desperately need a service that is fit for the future.
"Our draft local broadband plan has been submitted and, subject to approval by BDUK, the project team expect to be ready to start the procurement phase of the project by July this year, with roll-out of the enabling infrastructure commencing in 2013."
Many councils across the UK are making efforts to improve their broadband services, and Soctim has advised that IT chiefs should play a key role in any initiatives.
The group believes that the experts offer knowledge that can be beneficial with regard to boosting internet services.
