Web and IT facilities 'good for encouraging job prospects'

Broadband-enabled educational facilities could provide youngsters with the skills they need to attain a role in the IT sector in their later life, one expert has suggested.

A spokeswoman for e-skills, a non-profit UK-based organisation which works alongside employers to provide training solutions with advice, services and other programmes, said it was vital to understand the importance of such learning systems.

Karen Price, chief executive officer at the organisation, explained the steps being taken to encourage children to take IT onboard as a potential career path had resulted in some valuable options being made available.

"We are working hard with employers and educators to drive up the understanding and appreciation of IT among young people through a range of innovative and award-winning initiatives," she said.

Ms Price went on to say a number of interactive computer clubs had been set up especially for those between the ages of ten and 14 years old, adding that older kids up to 19 could also benefit from initiatives that have been put together with the help of businesses and potential employers.

"In addition, we are helping to reform technology-related education for young people," she concluded.

The comments follow the publication of a new survey from the British Computer Society last week that highlighted IT as a sector that was increasingly being seen as capable of offering people between 16 and 30 a "career of choice".

It also found 49 per cent of respondents believed more help should be given to employers in training staff in the latest technologies for business.
