Web users 'have the upper hand'

Broadband customers are likely to use whatever locations and facilities are best suited to their needs - and companies with stores online should be aware they need to keep up with this, one expert has advised.

A spokesman for Internet Retailer - a web-based publication which offers news and information on the latest trends, strategies and practices in the e-tailing sector - said it was clear that changes were taking place.

Don Davis, editor of the portal and data resource, explained that major retailers had already begun using social networking opportunities to target consumers and help boost flagging sales during this time of economic uncertainty.

However, he said that the emergence of sites like Facebook, MySpace and Twitter as retail facilities was just the beginning, with a broader trend for the internet as a whole having a major influence on not only our lives, but also how we shop.

"In a year, it will be commonplace. Retailers may prefer that consumers come to their sites, but they’re fighting a losing battle if they think internet users are going to bow to their wishes," Mr Davis noted.

The expert concluded by saying regardless of what happens, consumers will always make use of broadband services in a way that is "fun and convenient" - and this is something stores need to be focused on.

A recent article entitled Online retailers point to new phase for Facebook, which was published earlier this month by David Gelles of the Financial Times, said more and more sophisticated options for ecommerce were appearing on social networking websites.
