Welsh village battles for broadband availability

Wednesday 21st January 2009, by Daniel King

A Welsh MP has claimed it is "unacceptable" that residents in a local village are unable to access broadband services available to the rest of the country.

Adam Price said that broadband is "essential" to the prosperity of the local economy, as well as offering a social outlet for villagers in Cilycwm, Carmarthenshire.

Speaking to the South Wales Guardian, he revealed that he had written to BT to highlight availability issues in the area.

Along with AM Rhodri Glyn Thomas, he asked the company to outline what was being done to improve services and provide broadband access for the community.

"We have asked that they confirm what work has been undertaken to rectify the situation in Cilycwm and when a full service can be expected in the village," Mr Thomas said.

The pair said they had been working continuously to enable residents to get access to broadband and hoped to reach a solution soon.

"It is unacceptable that areas like Cilycwm are being left out of the loop whilst other parts of Wales are being provided for," Mr Price added.

This news comes after it emerged that a total of 30 homes in Bournemouth will be able to access a new superfast broadband service by the end of March.

Expected to become available to the rest of the town by 2010, the fibre to the home programme will enable users to take advantage of speeds up to ten times faster than those offered by standard connections.
