Wireless broadband 'is a winner' with consumers

Following the publication of figures outlining the growth of wireless technologies, one industry expert has considered the many reasons why consumers are taking advantage of such systems.

ABI Research recently predicted around one billion Wi-Fi chipsets would be shipped during 2011 alone and a spokesman for IT and electronics news resource Techworld has commented on this.

John Dunn, editor of the site, noted the increase in popularity of wireless broadband, 3G and other connectivity options had followed years of stagnation in the sector, but said prices were now as such that consumers could enjoy the benefits it had to offer.

He added this was also due to improved speeds and wider availability, noting that for all of these reasons, Wi-Fi was "a winner", having surfaced as a "mature, cheap" solution that has now "transformed the home networking market".

"It appeared on smartphones because it seemed like an easy way to make these devices internet-capable without compelling people to buy slower and expensive data plans from mobile phone networks," Mr Dunn explained.

However, he went on to say that the emergence of 3G has provided the sector with another new wireless option, although products such as Wimax - which has better long-range capabilities - could be the future.

The ABI Research was published on August 18th and revealed smartphones, netbooks and laptops as increasingly important to the Wi-Fi market, with other consumer electronics like televisions, cameras and portable media players playing a larger role.

A study from Mintel also found last month that technology sales could reach over £50 billion by the end of 2010.
