Women 'know all about broadband and IT'

More female broadband users could move into the information technology (IT) sector as the old ideas about the field have been consigned to history, one expert has argued this week.
A spokeswoman for the British Computer Society's Young Professionals Group (YPG), a support network which provides services and education to people looking for employment in the field, said there was a growing portion of women that were moving into jobs across the area.
Jennifer Hewitt, chairman of the YPG, explained this was largely due to the development of internet technologies and electronic gadgets that have made the web seem like a more user-friendly environment.
She added this was helping to destroy the image supported by TV shows like The IT Crowd and The Big Bang Theory, which seem to suggest people who are familiar with computers are geeky or nerdish.
"It's constantly changing," Ms Hewett noted. "More and more people know how to use the internet for everything. Even housewives can order their shopping from supermarket sites online these days and have it delivered."
"From things like that, people know [IT] underpins everything."
A recent survey entitled Women & Digital Life, which was put together by analysts at Solutions Research Group, revealed how broadband internet access had, among other things, impacted on the lives of females living in the US.
It was found that 58 per cent of respondents were spending more time online than they did when the economic downturn took hold.
