Worldwide broadband subscriptions reach nearly 400m

The number of broadband subscriptions across the world reached nearly 400 million in the third quarter of 2008.

According to a Point Topic report, there was a 4.15 per cent growth in the number of people with internet connections internationally, taking the total up to 398.4 million.

In addition to the total number of people taking up broadband subscriptions increasing, the growth rate increased quarter-on-quarter.

Between the first and second quarter of 2008 there was a total broadband growth of 3.92 per cent.

The global household penetration was 25.3 per cent in the third quarter of 2008, up 4.1 per cent on the preceding three months.

Western Europe experienced a decline its regional share in this period, down from 26.19 per cent to 25.81 per cent.

South and east Asia's share of the total broadband subscriptions increased by 0.67 per cent, while eastern Europe's rose 0.25 per cent.

The uptake of DSL broadband still dominates the uptake at 65.4 per cent of the market share.

However, next-generation fibre optic connections experienced the highest quarterly growth.

Its total broadband technology share rose to 12.05 per cent between the second and third quarters of 2008, taking the total number of subscribers with this service up to 45.3 million across the world.

China overtook the US as the nation with the largest number of subscribers to broadband connections.

The UK was pushed down from fifth to sixth place as France move up the list.

UK broadband connections reached the 16.6 million mark between April and June this year.
