Yahoo! and Google launch search enhancements

Broadband users across the world may notice a number of changes that have been made to the search engine facilities of two of the internet's biggest companies.

This week saw both Yahoo! and Google make a series of alterations to its offerings designed to make the online user experience simpler and more effective for the providers themselves.

According to Yahoo!, several changes to its Search Assist feature on its web boxes will better direct people to news, sports, finance and all other required information by providing more data when people type in their keywords.

As one example, the company said by looking for a market-listed firm under its stock symbol, broadband users will be given real-time stock quotes and links to charts and news regarding the organisation itself.

"When you type the name of an athlete, like Kobe Bryant, Search Assist shows news, game log, scores and schedules," it added. "You can also see travel information when you type the name of any travel destination."

Google's changes, on the other hand, are connected to how to target surfers' requirements through the use of text, video and images, with a "blended" option that combines all three in search results.

It was noted that one instance where this might come in handy is gift shopping, where simple words may not be enough information to find the product you are looking for.

The firm explained: "If you're looking to buy … a new handbag for the holidays, for instance, you might want to see pictures, prices, the addresses of boutiques in your area and a map of how to get there."
