Youngsters 'favour social networking sites'

Monday 11th June 2007, by Daniel King

Young people making the most of their broadband connections tend to favour visits to social networking sites such as Facebook and Bebo, a study has shown.

Research conducted by comScore found that young people were 25 per cent more likely to be online than other demographics of the population, spending about 24 per cent more time surfing the web than other Britons.

"The higher use of the internet among those aged 15 to 24 reflects the fact that this age group has grown up online, demonstrating how integral the internet is to their lives," said Bob Ivins, managing director of comScore Europe.

He added that the results showed how comfortable youngsters were with the internet, using the facility for communications, commerce, community and content more than other age groups.

Among the top five websites as selected by young Britons was Myspace, Bebo and Tagged, while news and entertainment portals Alloy and Artistdirect Network were also highly rated.

Earlier this year, the Times reported that two million youngsters in China spend much of their time surfing the internet.
