YouTube launches online movie service

Wednesday 1st September 2010, by Daniel King

YouTube is now offering broadband users a free movie section following deals with Blinkbox and Sony Pictures.

Viewers will be able to choose between more than 400 titles, covering every conceivable genre.

Films available from YouTube's free service include cult films, lesser-known films, classic British films and Bollywood films.

Some of the titles mentioned include The Clan of the Cave Bear, Loved and Dark Side of the Sun.

The content will be funded through adverts, with 165 films freely available and the rest for cheap rent at £1.99.

Commenting on the venture, the head of video partnerships at the channel Donagh O'Malley said: "This is one of many efforts to ensure people can find all the different kinds of video they want to see, from bedroom blogs and citizen journalism reports to full-length films and TV shows.

"This is a first step and we hope film lovers enjoy the wide range of titles our partners have made available."

Some of its industry rivals include Lovefilm, Sky, Apple, Zune and Amazon.

The increased uptake of broadband may not necessarily mean more interest on online video content.

A recent report conducted by Deloitte and YouGov on behalf of the MediaGuardian Edinburgh Television Festival found that more than half (55 per cent) of people surveyed would not watch more television online even with faster broadband speeds.
