BT has begun a major restructuring of its internal management structure in order to adapt to the demands of 21st century broadband provision.
The company has formed two new business units, BT Design and BT Operate. BT Design will be responsible for the design and development of new services while BT Operate will concentrate on the deployment and operation of these services.
BT insists that the strategic move is not one that will cut staffing costs but one which will make its services "more reliable, easy to buy and easy to use".
"This is the second phase of BT's transformation," said Ben Verwaayen, BT chief executive.
"The first phase saw BT shift its focus from narrowband to broadband. This next stage is equally important. It will see BT advance from a 20th century hardware-based company to a 21st century software-based services company.
"In a software driven world, services will be available in real time and around the globe, harnessing the potential of BT's 21st Century Network."

Speeds in excess of 2 meg are only available in certain areas. Top
speeds vary significantly, particularly according to how far away
you live from the exchange.
If your line won’t support our fastest broadband speed we’ll
give you the best available. The speed you actually get can also vary
depending on the quality of your line, the wiring in your house, the
time of day and even the weather.
