BT asks public sector for broadband support in London

Monday 21st July 2008, by Daniel King

Broadband provider BT has called on public sector organisations to support its £1.5 billion plan to rollout high-speed internet services in London.

The firm intends to develop a fibre-based broadband system capable of speeds of up to 100Mb/s and is asking bodies such as the London Development Agency to help introduce the scheme to the capital.

BT plans to concentrate its investment in areas demonstrating high public sector interest and is looking for organisations willing to work in partnership to achieve super-fast broadband speeds.

Emma Gilthorpe, BT's director for London, said that the city was "already a tremendous broadband success story", before claiming that the next stage of its development would present a "great opportunity" for organisations to be involved in that success.

She added: "BT is keen to invest further in the city, so it is important that London's public sector works with us to ensure the funds are directed here."

Analysts at Goldman Sachs told Reuters last week that BT's new plan demonstrates the growing importance of speed in the UK broadband market.
