BT enters into

BT will be spending around £1 billion on its roll-out of fast broadband services.

The telecoms provider has negotiated a deal with the systems supplier Huawei, to speed up the process.

It is aiming to get next-generation broadband to at least 75 per cent of UK households within the next five years.

Commenting on the deal, the chief executive of BT's Openreach Division said: "BT and Huawei have had a strong relationship for several years; we are pleased to extend this further by choosing Huawei as one of our strategic partners to help us deploy next-generation access on a national scale as part of BT's £2.5bn investment in fibre technology."

Its announcement follows the government's news last month that it will not be able to provide minimum 2Mbit/s until 2015.

This is three years longer than estimated by the Labour government.

Superfast broadband could be a real boon to businesses, schools and public services.

An Ofcom report published last week revealed that 71 per cent of households in the UK were connected online.

However, digital campaign group Race Online 2012 has highlighted that there are still ten million adults who have never accessed the internet.
