BT gives homes and businesses free broadband boost

BT has announced plans to boost its broadband services in a move the company states will benefit millions of home and business users across the UK.

This week the telecommunications group unveiled its free accelerator offer, which claims to be able to provide faster speeds Over via ADSL 2+ technology - which could be available to residential customers during summer.

Web users in areas that support the new connections could see their services boosted from up to 8 Mb/s to up to 20 Mb/s and will not have to pay extra for it.

BT's chief executive officer of retail Gavin Patterson said it was the fact the offering would be made free to existing homes and businesses who subscribe to its internet contracts that sets it apart from its rivals.

"High-speed broadband provides a faster and more reliable service that will transform the way we live, work, learn and play," he added. "We believe the true value of broadband is in helping customers enjoy the exciting new services that it makes possible."

The company states that its business users will start to see some of the increased speeds implemented from today and this will then roll out to the rest of its 4.8 million customers.

BT's ADSL 2+ technology is based on the 21CN platform and will also allow for faster uploading - with speeds of up to 1Mb/s.

Earlier this week, the communications services provider announced it had expanded its relationship with Swiss crop specialists Syngenta to provide more IT and networking solutions for the group.
