BT Home Hub 'open to hacking'

BT Home Hub 'open to hacking' BT's broadband service provided through their Home Hub scheme could be susceptible to hijacking, according to a report by the Register, highlighting the importance of security when shopping around for broadband deals.

The report claims that hackers can take advantage of a vulnerability when customers make a call routed over the internet, which allows the attacker to make calls on the user's machine, using a false number.

Hackers could then "coax account credentials or other sensitive information from the victim by impersonating a person from a bank", explained the publication.

BT took action by disabling the Remote Assistance feature, which patched the original vulnerability but there are concerns that further action may be required.

The article adds that phishing could mean that customers unwittingly call expensive numbers, or find themselves open to pranks.

BT offers services such as BT Netprotect, which is "designed to give you peace of mind every time you go online" by protecting against viruses and hackers.
