BT hopes for 'fastest ever residential network'

Thursday 10th January 2008, by Daniel King

BT is planning to install super-fast fibre connections at it Ebbsfleet site, according to a report in the Guardian.

The plans could result in the fastest ever network, as speeds would be 20 times faster than the standard currently offered by copper phone lines.

The work will be undertaken by the company's Openreach unit, with the aim of creating an infrastructure which can be used by other internet providers on a wholesale basis.

Business minister Stephen Timms has commented on the development of next-generation broadband which he hopes will be at the core of the growth of the UK economy.

"Ultra fast broadband is a key future technology that will allow our businesses to innovate, grow and create wealth as well as providing even greater options for consumers," he told the publication.

Ofcom was critical of BT Openreach in 2007, with the watchdog saying that customers should be offered more compensation for problems with the service to ensure "consistently high quality service".
