BT increases hold over broadband market
Thursday 25th October 2007, by Daniel King
Telecoms firm BT has strengthened its hold over the UK broadband market by adding an extra 600,000 users within six months, new figures show.
BT's Total Broadband offering added more customers than any other broadband provider between the last three months of 2006 and the end of June 2007, statistics from industry regulator Ofcom suggest.
While BT's customer base and market share has grown, rival Virgin Media has seen a slight fall in customers over the same period.
However, as the total number of broadband connections in the UK topped 14 million, the majority of the new custom was grabbed by smaller local loop unbundling (LLU) broadband firms, including Tiscali and UK Online.
Earlier this year, Ofcom's Peter Phillips said: "Industry innovation and competition continue to deliver significant benefits to the UK economy and consumers."
The largest LLU broadband provider is the Carphone Warehouse, with more than 150,000 LLU customers.
