BT increases UK Wi-Fi broadband access

Monday 21st June 2010, by Daniel King

Many people in the UK will now find it easier to use Wi-Fi hotspots across the country thanks to a new move from BT.

The telecoms firm has announced it is to offer unlimited access to 1.5 million BT Fon and BT Openzone hotspots up and down the country.

This means you will probably find it easier to work away from home or the office with a fast and reliable internet service on your mobile phones, laptops or iPads, BT claims.

Furthermore, those of you who count among the O2 mobile customers who are about to have your access to 3G rationed when you upgrade to newer services will also be able to take advantage of the offer.

John Petter, consumer managing director for BT Retail, explained that by the end of 2011, the company hopes to extend its number of BT Fon and BT Openzone hotspots from 800,000 to more than 2.5 million.

He said: "Because of the growing number of BT customers with mobile devices such as tablet computers and smartphones, we know that mobile access to the internet is needed more than ever before."

While you can use BT Openzone in public places such as airports, cafes, hotels and motorway service stations, BT Fon is a Wi-Fi community that allows users to securely share access with other people in the UK.

The move also means those who previously had limits on the number of Wi-Fi minutes available to them depending on their BT Total Broadband contract can now enjoy unlimited access.

This news comes after BT recently announced it is to provide the broadcast and media network coverage for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games after agreeing a deal with Olympic Broadcasting Services London.

Will you be taking advantage of this new offer from BT?
