BT launches 159 new fast-speed exchanges
Thursday 30th September 2010, by Daniel King
BT has announced its plans for another 159 exchanges as part of phase six of its roll out of fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) technology.
FTTC is technology which connects the telephone exchange to the street side telephone cabinet.
It enables much faster speeds and broader bandwidths – the new exchanges enable speeds of up to 40Mbps.
Consumers living in the areas covered by the new exchanges are also likely to benefit from more competition, as internet service providers come on board to use the faster connections.
Just under 50 of the towns listed will benefit from faster speed fibre-to-the-premises connections.
This type of cable can allow for speeds of up to 100Mbps, but these more expensive connections will not be available throughout a region.
The new announcement is part of the telecom giant's plans to upgrade existing copper networks.
However, it has admitted that after 2015, it will need public sector funding to make it "commercially viable" to offer faster connections to the remaining third of the country.
One of the areas set to benefit from new FTTC connections is Dunblane.
Brendan Dick, director of BT Scotland, commented: "Fibre broadband has the power to revolutionise the way we use the internet.
"It has huge implications for the way we live, learn and do business, with massive opportunities for entertainment, education and entrepreneurs.
"People in Dunblane will soon be able to experience the internet as they've never seen it before."
