BT launches "revolutionary" wireless community

BT launches The drive to improve the wireless broadband connection across the UK has been given a boost with the launch of a Wi-Fi sharing community by BT.

Under the new system, called Fon, all three million of BT's consumer Total Broadband customers will be invited to use up to 190,000 Fon hotspots across the globe.

In collaboration with Spanish company Fon, the service lets people share a "small portion" of their home broadband connection by opening up a separate secure channel on their wireless router.

Gavin Patterson, BT Group managing director, said: "We are giving our millions of Total Broadband customers a choice and an opportunity. If they are prepared to securely share a little of their broadband, they can share the broadband at hundreds of thousands of Fon and BT Openzone hotspots today, without paying a penny."

Last week, BT acquired IT specialist firm Lynx Technology in order to expand its business customer base.
