BT reaches 5m customers, says broadband can change lives

Wednesday 23rd December 2009, by Daniel King

Broadband can change people's lives, BT has suggested, following its celebration of passing the five-million subscriber mark for this technology.

The internet service provider said it was the first to reach this barrier and can therefore rightly claim the title as the UK's current number one.

High-speed access to the web is something more and more people are realising the benefits of, the company added.

Both consumer and business customers are asking BT for their products, with the fifth million signed up in just over two years.

However, lots of competition in the market means there are better deals springing up all of the time, with 99 per cent of the country's population served by broadband-enabled exchanges.

BT's consumer division managing director John Petter said "strong take-up" of broadband will be followed by further innovation in years to come.

"We believe bringing the content of things like iPlayer and ITVPlayer to the TV set via broadband is going to have a transformational effect when we launch Project Canvas with our partners next year," he explained.

The company rewarded its five-millionth customer with a free holiday to Canada.

Elizabeth Patterson of East Kilbride in Glasgow will be heading to Vancouver to watch the Winter Olympics.

She said the reasons why her family opted for broadband in 2009 were to shop online and help with the kids' homework.

News of the milestone follows an announcement earlier in December regarding the forthcoming MediaCityUK development in Salford, Greater Manchester.

BT Business won a multimillion-pound, five-year IT and communications contract for the hub.
