BT researches the digital gap

Monday 17th September 2007, by Daniel King

Broadband provider BT is to conduct research to find out why people resist using the internet.

As part of the company's Crossing the Divide initiative, psychologists will be employed to study a number of people to find out why they are resisting joining the majority of British people who use the internet regularly.

The research aims to learn more about the digital divide in the UK, with access to the internet not always proving to be the main reason for people not using it. Early research suggests that, for some, using the net is as stressful as a bungee jump.

Gavin Patterson, a spokesman for BT, said: "The gap between the competent internet user and those who have never been online has never been greater."

Figures released last month by Ofcom showed that 47 per cent of residents in the UK do not have a broadband connection at home.
