BT seeks entrepreneurial sprits

Tuesday 30th June 2009, by Daniel King

BT has launched a new competition to find the most successful small businesspeople to celebrate their achievements during a time when the private sector is particularly tough.

The telecommunications and broadband services provider has unveiled details of its latest BT Business Essence of the Entrepreneur 2009 event, where it states it will seek out "inspirational British companies who are using technology to drive their business forward".

Among the panel of judges who have been drafted in for the event is tycoon and star of BBC TV's Dragon's Den, Peter Jones, as well as runner-up of Alan Sugar's reality series The Apprentice Claire Young.

Jones said: "Whatever technology you use, being involved in this competition is an opportunity for any entrepreneur. By just applying makes you stop and think about the way you run your business and what you have achieved, which is important."

This week also saw BT announce details of a new partnership with Research In Motion that will see the group integrate the BlackBerry Mobile Voice System as part of its Wi-Fi business solutions.

By enabling its customers to access the service, the provider hopes to be able to help small businesses and entrepreneurs by allowing reduced mobile airtime costs as well as enhanced levels of productivity.

The system provides all the "out-of-the-office conveniences" of a BlackBerry handset but with airtime prices more akin to those found on traditional business landline packages.

Bill Murphy, managing director of BT Business, commented: "The solution will enable the delivery of unified communications tools for small to medium-sized businesses, which previously only benefited larger firms."
