BT 'set to expand superfast network'
Wednesday 12th May 2010, by Daniel King
So, you thought BT's proposal to bring superfast broadband to millions of households across the country was good news, did you?
Well, I'm not surprised.
Back in 2009 the telecoms firm announced it was going to deliver high-speed internet to 40 per cent of the UK by 2012, as part of a mega £1.5 billion investment programme.
The development of its fibre-based network even meant some 1.5 million homes would receive the technology by the end of the year, it said, which is obviously fantastic for broadband lovers across the country.
However, it would seem these proposals are just the tip of the iceberg.
That's because, according to reports from the Financial Times, BT is planning on expanding its fibre-based network even further.
It revealed this week that chief executive of the firm Ian Livingston is expected to outline an increase in the reach of the network from 40 per cent of British homes to 66 per cent.
And this will be achieved by adding to its £1.5 billion investment.
Writing for the news source, Andrew Parker, said: "The move underlines how Mr Livingston regards the superfast broadband network as one of BT's key assets and a source of potential growth."
He added the company may have been encouraged to enlarge the scope of the project in the face of competition with Virgin Media and the support the initiative has garnered from politicians in the UK.
What do you think about these suggestions.
Will you be keen to take up superfast broadband if gets rolled out in your neighbourhood?
