BT 'should improve Shetland connections'

Monday 10th March 2008, by Daniel King

Broadband provider BT has been criticised by MSP Tavish Scott over the service provision in some areas of the Shetlands, reports the Shetland Times.

Mr Scott explained that the important role of broadband meant the reliability of service was vital, as well as expanding availability to Shetland residents who are currently without any broadband connection.

"Broadband and mobile phones are things which can help to obliterate geographical disadvantages and create the much vaunted level playing field," said Mr Scott.

In a meeting between the islanders and BT the further roll-out of services was discussed, as well as ways of dealing with issues that could mean more islanders in remote areas are able to enjoy broadband provision.

Mobile coverage was also discussed, as a method of improving communications on the islands.

As part of its services in the UK, BT aims to "actively support local and regional communities" through expanding provision and projects aimed at digital inclusion, for areas such as the Shetland Islands.
