BT signs strategic partnership with ECI Telecom

Wednesday 7th July 2010, by Daniel King

Telecoms giant BT has selected global telecoms firm ECI to be a strategic partner in its bid to provide the UK with super-fast broadband, it has been announced.

The firm has been selected by BT's Openreach team to help deliver its next-generation access (NGA) project.

ECI will assist Openreach, which recently announced it is to invest a further £1 billion into the project, in extending deployment of fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) and fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) to two-thirds by 2015.

Openreach has now invested a total of £2.5 billion into the project.

Rafi Maor, president and chief executive officer of ECI Telecom, said: "Through a future-proof network proposition, we partner with Openreach in this first-of-its-kind project to guarantee high-speed infrastructure and a viable business model.

"We support Openreach's goal for cost-effective high-speed infrastructure offerings without compromising quality, security or competitiveness in such an open access environment."

By utilising ECI's 1Net framework for migration to next-generation networks, BT Openreach is hoping to benefit from a reduced risk in investment choices, improved revenue growth and the enhanced ability to meet "ever-growing bandwidth needs".

Steve Robertson, Openreach's chief executive officer, added: "With ECI as a strategic partner for this very advanced carrier-of-carriers architecture, we are able to upgrade our infrastructure offerings to communications providers and guarantee the provision of equivalency to all our customers."

The move could be of benefit to UK broadband customers with a range of internet service providers as Openreach has been made responsible for making sure that all rival operators have equal access to BT's local network within the country.
