BT's Infinity broadband 'will offer speeds 10 times faster than usual'

BT has launched a fibre-optic broadband connection for £19.99 a month which is capable of delivering super-fast internet to more than 40 per cent of homes across Britain immediately.
Infinity broadband will be £8 cheaper and six-times quicker than the service offered by many of its competitors, BT claims.
Popular computer features such as iTunes and online gaming will also work at a more rapid rate with the new Infinity connection in place.
Trials are already running in Whitchurch, Glasgow and Muswell Hill in London - which could help BT to iron out any difficulties before the product becomes widely available in 2012.
BT is investing £1.5 million in Infinity, which is set to offer users speeds that are ten times faster than the UK's current average.
Although the product will initially be accessible to 40 per cent of UK residents, the telecommunications company has admitted it will consider extending it to 90 per cent of the country.
Businesses could also take up BT's offer of a fibre-optic business broadband deal which will be available in fibre-enabled areas from next week.
Those who opt for the standard deal can choose from two tariffs - the first of which offers a 20 gigabyte limit for £19.99 a month with a £50 connection fee, while the second costs £24.99 a month but has no extra fee and allows unlimited downloading.
BT Infinity could be a boost to the British broadband market after a study by Akamei last week found the UK's internet is only the 26th fastest in the world with an average speed of 3.4 megabits per second.
