Court rap for BT over broadband blunder

Court rap for BT over broadband blunder A landmark court ruling in London has criticised BT for severing a mortgage company's broadband internet connection and then not mending it quick enough, according to reports.

Engineers mistakenly cut mortgage brokers Capital Fortune's broadband link and staff at the firm were left so angry that BT did not respond to its concerns quick enough that they launched legal action.

The company claims its bill for the loss of the connection came to four figures and many of its customers were unable to complete their mortgage deals.

BT was given an emergency injunction to repair the connection as soon as possible.

The incident serves to highlight how critical broadband internet is now becoming in today's ever-increasingly competitive business environment.

A spokesman for BT told The Register: "BT tries to provide the best service possible to all of its customers all of the time. We were already dealing with the fault that had caused a break in broadband service to Capital Fortune and we were already doing all we could to restore service to them as quickly as possible.

"There was no judgment on whether BT was in breach of contract because the judge did not consider that.

"Substantive proceedings will continue at a later date and it would be inappropriate for BT to comment further at this stage."

It is believed the ruling could prompt a number of claims for compensation from other businesses similarly affected around the country.
