Crying about broadband
Friday 15th February 2008, by Daniel King
Town criers from around Somerset are gathering in Taunton to announce that the county has the largest uptake of high speed internet, according to the Somerset County Gazette.
Reports from BT showed that the area was the worst connected in the south-west three years ago, but a major initiative funded by Connecting Somerset has encouraged broadband uptake.
BT also announced that 47 per cent of Somerset homes and businesses are now connected, a fact which was celebrated by the gathering of town criers at 11:00 GMT today.
Speaking about Somerset's achievement, BT's regional director for the south-west Sally Wilcox commented: "It shows that many of the county's people and businesses are switched on to the great benefits offered by high-speed broadband."
In January, BT claimed to have 8.5 million broadband connections across the UK, with all exchanges in the south-west now broadband enabled, serving 900,000 customers.
