ISP downtime 'affects two-thirds of us'

Tuesday 8th June 2010, by Daniel King

Internet service providers (ISPs) experiencing downtime is an issue that has affected the majority of broadband users in the past 12 months, a new poll has found.

According to the study, carried out by ISPreview, 64.7 per cent of respondents have had to suffer through between one and five or more periods of connection problems, where it has been impossible to get onto the web.

And the results are very much a mixed bag.

They show that 17.7 per cent have only had to deal with the problem once in the past year, with 14.8 per cent saying it's happened twice.

Not too bad.

But then it goes on to reveal that 20.9 per cent have actually experienced it five or more times.

Commenting on the figures, however, editor of the website Mark Jackson said they're not actually as scary as they look.

"We should not be too concerned about these findings. Connection problems and downtime are to be expected on such a technically complicated platform," he explained.

He went on to state: "Almost everybody will experience the odd outage, which normally lasts for no more than a few minutes or hours."

Furthermore, Mr Jackson noted the issue is something that should disappear as new fibre-based technology - such as BT's Total Broadband or Infinity products - is rolled out.

"The new generation of fibre-optic broadband services are expected to be a lot more resilient against some of the old problems," he added.

Is ISP downtime something that's affected you?
