North-east broadband to get faster?

People and businesses in the north-east may be encouraged to hear that one telecommunications boss is calling for more to be done about improving broadband in the region.
Bill Murphy, who is in charge of boosting the quality of BT's services, was quoted in the Sunderland Echo as claiming that regional organisations and bodies need to band together in order to increase the speed of broadband throughout the north-east.
According to the news provider, BT has promised to ensure 66 per cent of properties in the UK have access to fibre broadband within the next five years, but Mr Murphy admitted it is not only up to the company to try and get the rest connected.
He noted that decision-makers across the region will need to be prepared to help with funding and other elements of rolling out the service.
"If we're going to tackle the remainder, it's got to be done collectively", the expert stated. "The internet is the driver of many businesses, a lot of which wouldn't exist without it."
The Sunderland Echo commented that Durham has already seen fibre-based broadband improvements this month, with 14,500 homeowners now able to access higher speeds, while East Harrington is expected to see 12,000 properties connected in the coming weeks.
BT's managing director of the Next Generation Access team has promised speeds of up to 100 Mb to residents and firms, but it has been made clear that local authorities and institutions will need to support the initiative with guidance and funding, it added.
The telecommunications giant recently announced it will offer unlimited access to 1.5 million Wi-Fi hotspots around the country in the near future.
