O2 mobile broadband network to be given overhaul by BT

O2 mobile broadband network to be given overhaul by BT

By Brian Palmer (Tue, 2nd February 2010)

BT and O2 have announced a multi-million pound five-year partnership which will see O2's networks - such as its mobile broadband one - revolutionised and made more efficient.

The consolidated approach taken by BT Wholesale is set to provide O2 with the ability to deliver a range of communications services to its customers.

These include, of course, its telephone lines, as well as mobile broadband and other next-generation technology.

As a result of the consolidation, O2 is likely to see capital expenditure decrease and cost-effectiveness and efficiency rise.

BT Wholesale already works in conjunction with O2 to provide the latter's mobile broadband customers with core network management support and a managed network service.

Nigel Purdy, head of networks at Telefonica O2 UK, says: "As we move to an all internet-protocol world and as data traffic volumes increase, the consolidation of our fixed and mobile core networks is a common sense approach that will help future-proof our business and provide the best possible service for our customers."

As mobile broadband technology develops, the amount of data that must be transferred to power the latest functions is becoming higher.

With this in mind, a high capacity, efficiency and a resilient core network are essential if a high level of service is to be delivered to mobile broadband users on a regular basis.

O2 last week halved the price of one of its mobile broadband packages.

The firm has decided to charge just £25 instead of £50 a month for the Asus Eee PC 1005H netbook - which offers mobile broadband - on a 24-month contract.
