Scotland 'leading the broadband revolution'
Broadband firm BT has announced that Aberdeenshire and Shetland are the first places in Britain in which more than half of all homes and business are connected to broadband internet.
Aberdeenshire now has 50.9 per cent of homes and business premises hooked up to broadband, while Shetland has 50.7 per cent.
Local authorities in Scotland dominate the top ten areas for broadband, with Stirling, Aberdeen, Moray and the Highlands all featuring.
The first English authority mentioned in the broadband results is Oxfordshire in seventh place, while the Scilly Isles and Flintshire are in join eighth place with 46.4 per cent broadband penetration.
Brendan Dick, head of BT Scotland, said: "Fast internet access is now making a huge contribution to the economic success of Scotland, as businesses find new markets and work more efficiently and households capitalise."
According to recent research by Ofcom, in 2005 Scotland's broadband take-up stood at 31 per cent.
