Small businesses 'will flock to VoIP in '07'

Small businesses 'will flock to VoIP in '07' The percentage of small businesses using the web to make phone calls will double over the next 12 months.

Although voice over internet protocol services (VoIP), such as Skype and Vonage, have grown rapidly over the last year in the consumer market, but new research suggests small businesses are set to take advantage of the facility in 2007.

Over half of the small businesses questioned in the BT Business survey and 48 per cent of lone traders were planning to use VoIP in the next year, compared with just a fifth of larger companies.

Bill Murphy, managing director of BT Business, said: "There has been a huge increase in the use of VoIP by the UK's smaller businesses and that looks set to continue.

"However, there is a large proportion of the community, particularly medium-sized businesses, who could still benefit from understanding more about VoIP and using it to the best advantage of their business.

A third of businesses in London currently use the internet for phone calls, topping the regional tables, with businesses in the Midlands coming bottom with just 15 per cent.

Mr Murphy concluded: "At BT Business, we have a range of VoIP services designed specifically for business and our Total Broadband packages even include a free additional VoIP line."
