The importance of internet security while using broadband has been highlighted in a BBC report on the 15th anniversary of spam mail.
Although the phrase was first coined 15 years ago, after a Monty Python sketch, the first unsolicited bulk mail was sent 30 years ago.
Chief information officer at Spamhaus Richard Cox explained to the news provider that things changed from the noble beginnings of the web.
He states: "The gates to the internet were transferred from fairly prudent technologists to people who wanted to make money out of it. That's when spam caught on and ever since it has been a rear-guard action."
Mr Cox added that the use of spam was "holding back innovation" as it has been revealed that 90 per cent of email was now spam - which can lead to viruses and hijacking of unprotected computers.
Broadband suppliers such as BT Total Broadband can include security features such as spam blocking and fraud protection, as part of the package.
