Village residents set for broadband

Monday 12th July 2010, by Daniel King

The residents of a village that was overlooked by BT's plans to introduce super-fast broadband to the UK could soon be searching for broadband deals.

BT has revealed that due to additional funding being raised by local authorities Iwade in Kent will now receive fibre broadband.

BT originally said that Iwade was one of a number of rural areas in the UK that was not scheduled to receive super-fast broadband as the commercial case for deploying the network was "very challenging".

However after the local Parish and County Councils raised funds for the upgrade, the village is now expected to receive speeds of up to 40 Mbps.

Steve Robertson, chief executive of Openreach, BT's team dedicated to the nationwide roll out of super-fast broadband, said: "BT has already announced plans to bring fibre broadband to two thirds of UK homes and businesses by 2015 but we want to do more if we can.

"Our investment is one of the biggest commercial investments in fibre in the world and we are prepared to invest further if others are prepared to work with us. Our partnership with Iwade is a great example of this and we're very keen to work with other parts of the country on similar projects."

BT confirmed that by the autumn of this year, all 1,350 properties in Iwade will have access to fibre broadband speed of up to 40 Mbps.

A number of individuals and local businesses will be set to benefit from the increased speeds, which BT said will put Iwade "firmly on the UK's fibre broadband map".
