AOL appointment 'will help aid European growth'

Wednesday 8th July 2009, by Daniel King

AOL has announced the appointment of a new employee it hopes will be an essential part of its expansion plans for a number of its properties in Europe.

This week, the former internet service provider enhanced its presence in the online marketing sector by revealing Kate Burns as head of sales on the continent.

It explained the role would involve the expansion of AOL's various subsidiaries - such as the Advertising.com third-party network - and said the new chief will report directly to the group's global advertising and strategy president Jeff Levick.

As former vice-president and managing director in Europe of Bebo - the company's social media portal - Ms Burns is familiar with the market and the firm's position within it.

Commenting, Mr Levick said the region was key to realising AOL's desire to become "the largest global platform for online display advertising" and as such it felt it had the right person in place to help achieve this.

"Kate is a well recognised and highly respected leader in Europe who has the talent, energy and determination to scale our European operations and deliver on this strategy," he added.

Ms Burns confirmed she was looking forward to getting to grips with the role, having spent time at a number of other firms including Dailymotion UK, Google, Altavista and Doubleclick.

Last month, AOL announced it had installed Ken Parnham, the former director of European advertising operations at AdLINK, as country manager for the UK and Ireland.
