Broadband investment welcomed by expert

One expert has commented on the implementation of new broadband technology by York Data Services that will boost the web capabilities of nearby business facilities.

The firm recently announced investment of over £250,000 in the fibre link system that would bring speeds up to two-gigabit and would encourage more companies to consider the area as a place to set up shop.

A spokesman for Broadband.co.uk, a site that provides independent, expert advice on internet upgrades or new connections, has since welcomed the move, noting that the funding of any such improvements is good for the country as a whole.

Edd Dawson, editor of the online resource, explained that in a practical sense, the introduction of fibre optic technology would help get around the capacity problems of traditional copper-wired and asymmetric digital subscriber line systems.

"It is a great investment in infrastructure for the future," he added.

However, Mr Dawson went on to say that at the moment there were no local initiatives that were being linked to a wider, national project or infrastructure plan - which is something that needs to be addressed.

"So while [the York announcement] is great and great for the people doing this, I think that you should not draw the focus away from the need for a national policy to roll out a unified infrastructure for the whole country," he concluded.

The move follows plans outlined in the government's Digital Britain report earlier this year that promised investment in boosting all national broadband services to allow high-speed web access for the whole of the UK.
