Broadband 'now essential to business growth'

Broadband services are becoming increasingly important to business users and people looking to expand their entrepreneurial activities, one expert has advised this week.

According to a spokesman for one UK-based internet advice resource, the more investment there is in web services, the more firms will be able to take advantage of the various products and opportunities they can bring.

Edd Dawson, editor of Broadband.co.uk, said it was now very necessary for businesses to be equipped to share and exchange data, as well as adopt auxiliary services like voice over internet telephone calls.

He added the sector was also seeing companies aggregate many of their day-to-day processes using the flexibility of a solid and reliable broadband connection - with one example of this being able to conduct meetings with people on a remote basis.

"You can rely on client services for things like email and even going up to things like applications, it reduces the reliance of having to have your entire IT structure in a single base. If you have got a good connection, you can make use of client services so it can scale with your business," Mr Dawson noted.

In conclusion, the expert also drew attention to the fact that by investing in better broadband technology, the business sector may be equipping itself to come out of the economic downturn in a stronger position, but said this was also reliant on having the right employees and infrastructures in place.

In a recent article for the Times, prime minister Gordon Brown discussed how the internet was now as vital to some as traditional utilities like water and gas.
