BT speeds up fast web technology implementation

BT has announced its further commitment to ensuring more homes in the UK have access to super fast broadband by this time next year.
The web and telephone services provider revealed this week it was implementing plans to give 1.5 million the ability to connect to the high-speed internet by early summer 2010.
In addition, BT unveiled some of the initial locations which would form part of its focus for fibre optic broadband technology, confirming that pilots in Muswell Hill, London and Whitchurch, South Wales began this week.
Steve Robertson, chief executive of the group's Openreach division - which is responsible for the implementation of the technology - said the future of the country depended on getting the best available internet offerings in place and it was for this reason the company was moving ahead as quickly as possible.
"We had aimed to get fibre to half a million homes by next March but we're now being far more ambitious. We've received a tremendous response to date and so we're keen to get on with the job," he explained.
Mr Robertson added BT had so far put billions of pounds into putting together a national network that was also available to other providers, concluding that this demonstrated "competition doesn't have to be a barrier to investment".
Earlier this month, the group announced the launch of Communicating for Success - a channel available through its BT Vision product that showcases local sport and education in the UK.
