Business broadband could be key for improving sustainability

Business broadband could play an increasingly important role as organisations seek more sustainable ways of operating, including client meetings and data management.
Drives to improve operational efficiency and business enablement are the most practical ways most businesses seek to improve sustainability, according to research by Gartner.
The analyst firm identifies IT as the best opportunity to improve sustainability, using analysis, optimisation and management tools to establish ways to improve performance.
Researchers discovered that this application of IT and broadband services ranges from the obvious remote working and online collaboration as an alternative to travel, to the more complex, such as real-time manufacturing automation and management of the supply chain.
Gartner research vice president Simon Mingay explained: "A sustainable approach to business activities is generating tangible business benefits for organizations today, through a combination of operational efficiencies and market growth opportunities."
Business broadband is fast proving its value in the retail sector, with the Centre for Retail Research indicating that the micro-blogging site Twitter can be particularly good for niche retailers.
For smaller retailers, it is a good opportunity to try and build a community.
