Facebook 'emerging as an online shopping player'

A spokesman for Alvenda, a provider of targeted marketing solutions using a range of internet-based facilities, said those looking to boost their e-tailing profile could do so by getting online.
Brian Howe, chief strategy officer at the privately funded company, said Facebook offered a range of storefront options that users were interacting with and could help the site emerge as a major player in the online shopping sector.
However, he added that his own company was one which worked on the assumption that the majority of purchases happen off-site and this was an area where Facebook could be used to set up brand differentiation.
Mr Howe added online retailers looking to increase their revenue stream need to choose a virtual location for setting up shop and this can be aided by social networking portals as they provide "a powerful home base for gifting".
"Our vision includes gift lists, events sharing, group gifting and of course enabling the transaction wherever the customer happens to be," he concluded.
The expert's comments follow an article posted on the Financial Times website by David Gelles that suggested Facebook had recently seen a new wave of ecommerce applications that could see it become a destination for online shoppers and marketers.
"Companies are turning to social media sites [
] to help them boost business," Mr Gelles explained. "Many big retailers have a fan page on Facebook, while retailers large and small are offering exclusive deals to their Twitter followers."
