ISP new advertising platform

ISP new advertising platform TalkTalk, Virgin Media and BT have all signed up to an advertising service which will mean broadband users are offered more targeted marketing, according to Reuters.

Using the searching habits of customers, the new Phorm service could mean an increase in advertising revenue for internet service providers (ISP) and others involved in the industry.

Commenting on the scheme, Phorm's chief executive Kent Ertugrul told the news agency: "This benefits advertisers, publishers and consumers alike, and introduces a completely new level of effectiveness in online advertising."

Those interested in online security may also like to know about the free service provided with Phorm, which offers customers protection against online fraud.

A report from the Yankee Group showed that online advertising in the USA is expected to reach $50.3 billion (£27.3 billion) in revenue by 2011, twice the figures accrued in 2007.

Some 25 per cent of media consumption is expected to take place online in the next three years, according to the statistics, highlighting the importance of internet advertising to businesses.

Comments

The most worrying aspect is the guy who runs Phom, Kent Ertegrul. One of his repugnant past activities has been to create a company called PeopleOnPage. As part of that scam PeopleOnPage infected computers with toolbars that snooped your surfing habits, and offered free software that carried a trojan rootkit bombload which promptly did an ET and sent back a list of your hard drive. Things got so bad with this outfit that the likes of Symantec and F-Secure blacklisted them as dangerous spyware. For my ISP to go into business with him at this level is like making Machinegun Kelly a bank manager
