ISPs urged closer contact with authorities

ISPs urged closer contact with authorities All UK internet service providers (ISPs) should employ a 24-hour point of contact to cooperate with the law enforcement agencies when the authorities are concerned about a user's web use, the country's leading internet trade association has recommended.

As part of its new best current practice document, the Internet Services Providers' Association (ISPA) advises British ISPs to have better relations with the security services and should be willing to share details when it is suspected one of their customers is using the net illegally.

Jessica Hendrie-Liano, the chair of the ISPA council, said: "ISPA already has excellent relations with the Home Office, government officials and law enforcement agencies. This document aims to strengthen these ties."

Although the majority of broadband providers in the UK subscribe to the ISPA's recommendations, which are not legally binding, not all customers are protected by their regulatory control.

Once such example is Orange, as its broadband product is a "free" part of the paid-for internet-mobile bundle.

Alison Carter, Orange compliance officer, confirmed to the Register: "As Orange Mobile are not members of ISPA your complaint will not be handled using ISPA guidelines - we have informed ISPA of this."
