Northern Irish broadband improvement receives funding

Thursday 30th July 2009, by Daniel King

Funding has been awarded to two companies in a bid to improve broadband services in rural Northern Ireland and make it more convenient for residents to access websites and online services more quickly.

The investments are worth £177,000 and are part of the £1.9 million Broadband Fund, which is claimed to offer support for businesses in the region, said enterprise minister Arlene Foster. It is focused on rural locations and organisations attempting to offer high speed broadband solutions.

North West Electronics and Net 1 Limited are two firms specialising in providing such services and were identified as the recipients of the money.

The former is set to use the cash to extend its fixed wireless broadband network in the north-west and offer commercial products.

Net 1 also supplies fixed wireless access as well as internet connections to rural Northern Ireland. It will put the funding towards developing its infrastructure into different areas such as Belcoo, Marlbank and Kinawley.

Ms Foster said it was vital for high speed services to be made available where possible.

"The work of North West Electronics and Net 1 Limited will span areas within County Londonderry and County Fermanagh, allowing those living and working in some of the most rural locations, to benefit from high quality, affordable broadband access," she added.

Meanwhile, earlier this month saw John Lewis & Waitrose comment on the popularity of booking holidays using the internet.

Director of card services at the retail company James Furse said it was a "powerful tool" to search for the best getaway on the market.
