Ofcom wants broadband investment

Ofcom wants broadband investment Ofcom has unveiled a new framework for investment in Britain’s broadband networks.

The regulator has challenged the industry to back the proposed rollout of super-fast broadband networks across the country.

Ofcom wants companies to support its new pro-investment plan and commit to the development of broadband services

Ed Richards, Ofcom chief executive, outlined the proposals at the Intellect conference in London and stressed that a regulatory framework would be put in place that enabled operators to "make and keep a rate of return that is commensurate with the risks they are taking".

"We want investment in a competitive environment," he explained. "Over the last few weeks there has been a step change in the level of interest and engagement on Next Generation Access issues from a range of companies and organisations."

The watchdog plans to launch a new regulatory framework for super-fast broadband networks this September.

A recent study by the Communications Management Association warned that business efficiency is being significantly affected by comparatively slow broadband speeds in the UK and called on companies to improve provision.
