Small businesses 'need to get online payment advice'
Thursday 27th December 2007, by Daniel King
Small businesses that use broadband need to seek advice before accepting payments online, recommends Tony Neate, managing director of Get Safe Online.
Get Safe Online is an initiative comprising of HM Government, the Serious Organised Crime Agency and leading businesses. It offers guidance for broadband and other internet users.
Mr Neate explained that if "you are not an expert in relation to computers and computer security and you have your own e-commerce site or server, then you need to get advice".
"If you are taking people's credit card details and transacting online, make sure you have listened to the correct advice," he adds.
Research by Get Safe Online showed the extent of cyber crime, with 44 per cent of small businesses in the UK apparently experiencing problems such as identity fraud, phishing, hacking and data theft.
Other findings by Microsoft, following an increase in 'lottery' spam, indicate that ten per cent of internet users have replied to lottery scam emails.
