Urban broadband take-up 'will continue to grow'

The mainstream take up of ultra-fast broadband services in the UK is likely to continue to revolutionise the way in which people consume online content such as music, video and telecommunications, according to a new report.

In a paper published by researchers and experts at Gartner this week, it was noted urbanised areas of the nation are set to carry on adopting internet packages that offer the best available speeds.

However, it warned those in rural and less populated locations across Britain could subsequently become neglected in this area - leading to a "bandwidth divide" that could present itself within the next three to five years.

Fernando Elizalde, principal research analyst at the group, explained high-performance web connectivity could become a major issue that governments in all countries will have to deal with, as demand for the best possible services grows across all types of demographic.

He added it was also up to service providers to create greater availability for fast internet connections as a premium service, stating this would help "avoid commoditisation of ultra broadband and strike a balance between their need to charge more … and consumer willingness to pay for the extra speed".

The Gartner report defined these high-end facilities as capable of support for download speeds of 50 Mbps and above, noting that in addition to the home entertainment benefits these packages will bring, they also offer "significant opportunities for application developers and service providers".

Last week, Andrew Ferguson of thinkbroadband.com said consumers continued to be confused about the misleading messages some companies put out about the quality of their packages.
